Public Bus Service: San Jose <--> Jaco BeachPublic buses run between San Jose and Jaco Beach and back several times a day. All buses depart and arrive between the Jaco Terminal that is located near Pizza Hut at the North end of Jaco, and the "Coca Cola" station in San Jose. Fares are very inexpensive and it is highly recommended that you arrive at the station early and buy your ticket as they tend to sell out fairly quick. Bus rides usually take around 2 to 2 1/2 hours and will include a 10 minute break near Orotina (about half-way). If you need more information, you may call the Jaco station at 643-3135 (Spanish only!).San Jose --> Jaco Beach

Public Taxis: Asotaxi JacoJaco Beach runs a very efficient public taxi system. It is very easy to request a taxi- simply call one of the two phone numbers (643-3030 or 643-2020) and say "Un taxi a [your location] por favor.". Next, they will either say "No hay disponibles", which means there aren't any available and you should call back in five minutes, or they will say the taxi number that will be arriving. The easier route, of course, is to ask the reception of wherever you are staying at to call you a taxi. You can also sometimes flag taxis down, but they usually won't stop since they are going to pick up another customer that called. If you are downtown Jaco near Mas X Menos, there is the main taxi stand just north on the main road. If there are none there, one should pull up within five minutes. A lot of drivers will be able to understand basic English and almost always will know where you want to go. It is worth noting that there is also an illegal "pirate" taxi system in Jaco, however, they are not recommended for tourists as they are not typically quite as professional. Official government-run taxis are always red (except for Airport taxis, which are orange) with a taxi sign on top. Fares typically will run you about $1 - $4 for a trip anywhere within Jaco, and up to $20 for longer trips, such as to Esterillos. |
